As part of the project, the team created an interactive map allowing users to choose a destination and find the best route to suit their needs; whether they are seeking the shortest route, least amount of air pollution, fewest hills, or even the route with the most vegetation! The map also shows important information such as 2010 security road closures, bike parking locations, and Olympic lanes.

http://cvtest.soeh.ubc.ca/olympics.aspx

Project Blue Sky
The Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games have a climate goal. Environmental concerns, economic pressures, and increased political will combined to put pedal power front and centre. Decision-makers have rightly identified cycling infrastructure as a valuable tool in fostering sustainability. More and more people are discovering the fun, convenience, and health benefits of active transportation. But, it wasn't all downhill cruising and rain-free commutes. There were notable improvements to cycling policies and infrastructure in 2009, but impediments to better biking continue to highlight the need for greater attention to self-propelled travel in the region.

Full story

VACC Winter Programs

<span style="color: black; It also shows that despite evidence of the dangers since day one, corporate profits have (as usual) trumped public safety.

Promoting the Car Phone, Despite Risks

Martin Cooper, who developed the first portable cellphone, recalled testifying before a Michigan state commission about the risks of talking on a phone while driving.

Common sense, said Mr. Cooper, a Motorola engineer, dictated that drivers keep their eyes on the road and hands on the wheel.

Commission members asked Mr. Cooper what could be done about risks posed by these early mobile phones.

“There should be a lock on the dial,” he said he had testified, “so that you couldn’t dial while driving.”

It was the early 1960s.

Pedal Power Puts The Christmas in Copenhagen Climate Talks

COPENHAGEN, Nov. 30 /PRNewswire/ -- Counting down to the UN Climate Change Conference (COP15) in December, the people of Copenhagen will be pedalling hard to light up the traditional Christmas tree on City Hall Square.

Tradition has it that the big Christmas tree on Copenhagen's City Hall Square is lit up with hundreds of lights. But this year it will be a different story - unless people pedal hard, that is.

During the Climate Summit, Copenhagen's City Hall Square will be transformed into a climate-friendly city called Hopenhagen Live. Until 18 December, Copenhageners and anyone else who is concerned about the environment can jump on the bikes and pedal to light up the tree - and burn a few calories while they're at it. This alternative way of lighting up the Christmas tree will save the environment a total of nine tonnes of CO2 compared to the traditional way of powering the lights.

photo: http://www.copenhagenmediacenter.com

Copenhagen is already known as the City of Cyclists, and the term Copenhagenize has become a catchword for a new concept - when cities work to encourage increased usage of this healthy and CO2-friendly means of transport. With more than 350 kilometres of cycle lanes and one third of all Copenhageners commuting by bike every day, Copenhagen truly is a bicycle city.

While the UN Climate Summit is taking place in Bella Center from 7 - 18 December, the whole city will be booming with international cultural events. At City Hall Square there will be music, exhibitions and happenings. Al Gore and Bishop Desmond Tutu will be in town, and more than 65 heads of state and government will take part in the official COP15 in Bella Center - not to mention the 100 mayors from all over the world invited to City Hall Square during the summit.

Follow the cyclists lighting up the tree at http://www.hopenhagenlive.dk/

Solar Panel Prices Dropping Fast

Good news for a rare autumn sunny day in Vancouver! As part of the games, Hamilton will get a new 250m indoor velodrome built to meet international competition standards. It's a much-needed facility according to Andrew Iler, president of the National Cycling Centre.

"It's a gaping hole in our cycling infrastructure in this country that we can't host a major event," says Iler. "Our athletes have to go away to other countries to compete." He points out that Canada lags behind other nations in building the necessary infrastructure to foster the development of its track riders.

full story here

Vancouver in Video

The City of Vancouver has just launched its new <a href="http://vancouver.ca/mediaroom/"target=blank>Media Room. To address the issue, the Vancouver Area Cycling Coalition is encouraging commuters to consider biking to work. Thanks to positive feedback from cyclists during Bike to Work Week (Nov. 2 - 8) and continuing support from TransLink, the VACC is extending its commuter station program for cyclists until the end of December and offering workplace programs to educate commuters on the 'how-to' aspects of riding their bike to work. Six additional stations (dates and locations below) will be available in the coming weeks, for commuter cyclists to stop by and enjoy a hot drink and free snack, get advice on winter maintenance and equipment suggestions, and enter to win a variety of bike-friendly prizes. In addition, special holiday themes at some of the stations will help reinforce the fun aspects of cycling, regardless of weather conditions.

"There's no doubt that cold and wet weather can be a barrier to winter bike commuting," says VACC representative Lisa Slakov. "The commuter stations are a way to reward those year-round cyclists who stick with sustainable transportation choices. They are also a great place to provide advice on equipment, clothing, and safe routes for those who are just starting out."

In addition to the extra commuter bike stations, the VACC is offering riding workshops designed to help those looking for an easier way to get around during the 2010 Olympic Games. Workplaces and other organizations can take advantage of the program's sensible advice on safety and equipment, promoting realistic expectations, and offering potential cycle commuters the moral support they need to overcome perceived barriers.

"How do I get started? Not being able to answer that question seems to be the biggest roadblock to those wondering if biking to work is right for them," says Slakov. "Our workshops help people find the right answers. With the Winter Olympics coming and road closures soon to be affecting many parts of the region, we want people to know that getting to work by bike is a great way to avoid the frustration of traffic jams and transit overcrowding."

WINTER BIKE TO WORK COMMUTER STATIONS

Date: Friday Nov. 20
Location: Central Valley Greenway at Gilmore Way (Home Depot)
Time: 07:00-09:00

Date: Thursday Nov. 26
Location: SW corner of Burrard Bridge
Time: 16:30 - 18:30

Date: Friday Dec. 4
Location: Cambie and 10th Ave (West side of Cambie)
Time: 07:00-09:00

Date: Thursday Dec. 10
Location: Frances/Union bike route between Fell Ave and Kensington Ave
Time: 16:30 - 18:30

Date: Friday Dec. 18
Location: Ontario and 33rd, Vancouver
Time: 07:00-09:00

Date: Tuesday Dec. 22
Location: Union and Main (Adanac/Union bike route)
Time: 16:30 - 18:30

For more information on getting your organization involved in Bike to Work programs, please visit: http://www.biketoworkmetrovan.ca/

WINTER BIKE COMMUTING WORKSHOPS

For more details on the Winter Bike Commuting Workshops, including how your company or organization can participate, visit http://vacc.bc.ca/cycling/cycling.php?pageID=39#2 or contact the VACC office:

Vancouver Area Cycling Coalition
Phone: 604-878-8222
Email: admin@vacc.bc.ca
Website: www.vacc.bc.ca

MEDIA ENQUIRIES
Contact: Chris Keam
ckeam@telus.net
604-780-6125

The New York State of Mind

My latest article is online at the Tyee. Find out who's behind the Big Apple's transportation system reboot.

Why New York Enticed Translink Chief
When Translink CEO Tom Prendergast starts running NYC's transit system, he'll have a visionary ally in Janette Sadik-Khan.
By Chris Keam

Translink's challenges are once again in the spotlight, with a damning ministry report preceded by last week's announcement that CEO Tom Prendergast is leaving Vancouver to become the president of New York City Transit. The reasons for Prendergast's decision, rumored and official, include Translink troubles and Big Apple opportunities. But one largely unmentioned reality that surely played a role in Prendergast's decision is the powerful compatriot he will have in Janette Sadik-Khan. <a href="http://thetyee.ca/News/2009/11/08/TransitChiefToNYC/"target=blank>(Read the full article)

Mountain Equipment Co-op Unveils New Bike Line-up

A big development in the Canadian bike industry. The move reflects the co-op’s ongoing efforts to respond to its members’ needs and signals another step by the outdoor retailer to encourage Canadians to make cycling an integral part of their lives.

“Bicycles have a timeless appeal that we believe MEC bikes will honour and reinforce,” said CEO David Labistour. “Quality, value and performance are hallmarks of MEC-brand products, and these same traits define MEC bikes. We are confident that our members will be very satisfied with MEC bikes.”

With eleven styles in four categories – mountain, road, specialty and urban – MEC-brand bikes will appeal to all manner of riders. Each style is available in a unisex frame; three are also available in frames that are specifically designed for women.

The MEC bike line consists of two hard-tail mountain bikes, three road bikes and five urban styles. A folding specialty bike rounds out the line, which will also see a kids’ bike introduced in early 2010.

MEC bikes were designed in-house by seasoned Canadian bicycle designer, MEC product manager Tim McDermott. The line has a strong urban focus that aims to provide bike commuters and other city cyclists with a great riding experience, ease of use and low maintenance.

“The MEC bike line is geared to what our customers want,” said McDermott. “A majority of MEC members stated a preference for urban bikes, and we worked hard to push the bounds of what urban bikes can be.”

The Shadowlands model illustrates the urban focus. Featuring a lightweight aluminum frame, 27 gear options and hydraulic disk brakes, the Shadowlands makes ascending and descending even steep city streets easy. The bold, bright finish and unique graphic illustrations sets it apart from other bikes.

MEC’s entry into bike sales and repairs is a logical extension of the outdoor retailer’s 38-year history of supporting its members’ pursuit of self-propelled outdoor recreation. It is also part of the co-op’s long-term goal to get more Canadians, and youth especially, active in outdoor recreation.

“Our objective is to see more Canadians riding bikes – any bikes – and we welcome opportunities to work with the cycling industry and community partners to make that happen,” said CEO Labistour.

MEC’s community grants program has provided more than $450,000 to date in support of cycling advocacy and infrastructure projects across Canada.

MEC bikes are presently being sold at select Mountain Equipment Co-op stores, in Vancouver, Calgary, Toronto and Winnipeg as well as the co-op’s new Longueuil, QC store. MEC’s Burlington, ON and Montreal (Marche Central) stores will also be selling bikes, beginning in February 2010.

Each of these stores has a full-service repair shop staffed with at least one certified bike mechanic. The in-store bike shops and a rigorous cycling training program for MEC store employees are fundamental elements in supporting members’ purchases of MEC bikes.

MEC’s reputation for making products that last is evident in the quality parts that were chosen to complement name-brand components. MEC bikes are equipped with parts that should limit maintenance to only normal wear and tear.

Detailed product information – including a complete list of specifications, dynamic comparison charts and high-resolution images – for all MEC bikes is available at <a href="http://www.mec.ca/bikes"target=blank>www.mec.ca/bikes.

About MEC

Mountain Equipment Co-op (MEC) is Canada’s leading retailer of outdoor clothing, gear and services for self-propelled activities like hiking, cycling and snowsports. Unfortunately, they didn't have a record of the serial numbers of the bikes. If you own a bike, make sure you know its serial number. It will make the insurance process a bit easier, and will help you reclaim your bike if by slim chance it is recovered by police. You can usually find the serial number underneath the bottom bracket (the part of the frame holding the pedals, crank, and chainring).

You should also register your bike with the manufacturer if possible, or with a bike registry if there's one in your area. text-align: center;">

Oct. 15, 2009 – One week from now, endurance athletes Greg Kolodziejzyk of Calgary and Jordan Hanssen of Seattle, WA will attempt a nautical circumnavigation of Vancouver Island, piloting the custom-designed, pedal-powered boat Within on its first long-distance ocean voyage. Greg and Jordan will launch Within on Friday, Oct. 23 from Comox, BC and will travel clockwise around the Island. If successful, this voyage will be the first-ever circumnavigation of the Island in a pedal-powered boat.

The journey is expected to take approximately two weeks to three weeks, depending on weather and ocean conditions. British kayaker Sean Morley holds the current record for a human-powered trip around the island, completing a counter-clockwise paddling trip in 17 days, 4 hours, and 49 minutes in September 2008.

Greg has previously set 2 human-powered records (land and water) for the longest distance traveled in 24 hours. Hanssen was captain of the American team who won the trans-Atlantic Ocean Fours rowing race in 2006 and has also cycled coast-to-coast in Australia – from Perth to Sydney. Kolodziejzyk’s reason for this arduous journey isn’t about entering the record books however.

“My objective is to demonstrate the amazing things a human being can do under his or her own power. I hope to motivate and inspire more people to explore their own human-powered potential. It's good for the environment, it's essential for our health, and sends the right message regarding physical activity to our children.”

Hanssen says they’ll be expecting the unexpected, “I think Vancouver Island is a complex coastline with complex water. I feel confident, but there are definitely a lot of things we will learn. As I was once told by a veteran sailor, it’s all about how you recover from your first big mistake!”

The attempt is the duo’s first chance to test the boat in ocean conditions and an opportunity to prepare for an even more ambitious journey. Called Pedal The Ocean, Kolodziejzyk will attempt a solo Pacific crossing from Victoria to Hawaii, currently planned for June 2010.

Official Pedal The Ocean website: http://pedaltheocean.com/

PEDAL THE OCEAN FACT SHEET

Greg Kolodziejzyk is a successful entrepreneur who informally retired from the business world when he was in his mid-30s – to focus on improving his health and meeting new challenges. He started by signing up to compete in a triathlon. After losing 50 pounds racing and training, he went on to complete 12 Ironman distance triathlons, with a 4th place finish in his division at Ironman Arizona in 2006 earning him a coveted slot to compete at the Ironman World Championships in Kona Hawaii. Greg has also completed a dozen marathons and 2 ultra-marathons. He is currently training to complete his first 100-mile ultra-marathon.

No person in history has traveled further under his own power in one day, on land or water than Greg. In July of 2006, Greg earned his first world record by pedaling his human powered vehicle called Critical Power 647 miles (1041 km) in one day around a race track in Eureka, California. In September of 2008, he did it again, but this time on water when he pedalled his human powered boat Critical Power Two 152.3 miles (245.16 km) in 24 hours around a circular lake course in Whitefish, Montana earning him his second world record. Greg has been featured in the Guinness Book of World Records, Men's Journal magazine, Popular Science magazine, and on the Discovery Channel.

Greg's state-of-the-art human powered boat was designed by award winning naval architect Stuart Bloomfield and human-powered boat engineer Rick Willoughby. WiTHiN is 30 feet long by 3 feet wide, weighs 455 lbs, and features a water-tight sleeping cabin, cockpit, and storage compartment. WiTHiN will carry enough dehydrated food for 100 days at sea. Fresh water will be supplied via electric desalination plant powered by solar panels. Greg's safety equipment includes a GPS, Satellite phone, survival suit, emergency life raft, and emergency beacons.

Paris Offers Subsidies To E-bike Buyers

Paris has long been known as the City of Light. But increasingly, it's becoming the City of Bikes. The famous French city was at the forefront of the public bike movement with its successful and much-emulated velib program. Now, a subsidy for e-scooters has been extended to e-bikes as part of the city's strategy to promote cycling for transportation. Parisians can get up to € 400 from the Paris Council when they buy an e-bike. And, unlike some of the North American cash-for-clunkers programs which quickly blew through their budgets, this French initiative currently has no end date or limit on how much will be spent for the program.

Putting Your Roof To Work - Dow Unveil Solar Shingles

Dow Chemicals has come up with an easy-to-install solar-power-generating shingle utilizing thin film solar cells. The shingles are intended to replace typical asphalt shingles and are installed (with nails) in the same way. "Electric vehicles, fuelled by clean, renewable energy resources, will help us achieve a low carbon transportation future."

The memorandum of understanding brings together representatives from each organization to identify opportunities to promote the use of zero-emission vehicles in Vancouver and other areas in B.C. Discussions will also explore the establishment of charging infrastructure in Vancouver.

"Today is an exciting day for Nissan Canada as we announce an important step in making electric vehicles a reality in the Canadian market," said Mark Grimm, President of Nissan Canada Inc. "We have the technology for zero-emission mobility without compromise and working with important partners like those signing this agreement is a critical step in this evolution."

"Moving towards a zero-emission mobility program gets Vancouver closer to our goal of becoming the world's greenest city," said Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson. "We've moved very aggressively to bring in electric vehicle charging infrastructure regulations for Vancouver that are a first for North America. The City will need electric vehicles to charge on that new infrastructure. We are very pleased to be the first Canadian municipal partner of Nissan, a global leader in electric-vehicle technologies."

The agreement also supports an application to the federal government's Clean Energy Fund for a charging infrastructure pilot program planned by the Province, BC Hydro and the City of Vancouver.

"We continue to work with industry and government partners to ensure British Columbia is ready for the introduction of electric vehicles," said Bob Elton, President and CEO of BC Hydro. "We are building a conservation culture in B.C. which includes not only the efficient use of electricity but also the protection of air quality."

The agreement adds B.C. to a growing network of zero-emission vehicle initiatives across the world. Expocycle, Canada's own cycling trade show got underway Sept. 10, with the Bicycle Trade Association of Canada's annual general meeting. Topping the agenda, BTAC's plans to promote 'urban' cycling. The organization has recognized the fast-growing segment of the marketplace and plans to lobby government with the hopes that more infrastructure and consideration of the role of bikes as a means of transportation will be part and parcel of efforts to improve health, fitness, and quality of life across the country.

Norco was one of the manufacturers showing off bikes
designed for urban transportation at Expocycle.
photo: Chris Keam

One week later, Canadian achievements were in the spotlight at the World Human Powered Speed Challenge in Battle Mountain Nevada. Sam Whittingham continued his dominance of the sport by setting a new self-propelled world record (82.8 mph/133.3 kph) with the latest recumbent racer from the fertile mind of Georgi Georgiev (the Varna Tempest). Also setting a record with a Georgiev bike (Varna Diablo) was Barbara Buatois. She's now the fastest woman on the planet, recording a 75.5 mph (121.437 kph) run during the same Friday evening set of speed runs that saw Sam break his own 2008 record. Team Varna is now the first team to hold both the Men's and Women's top speed and one hour records. The one hour records were set earlier in the year, at the Ford Human Powered Vehicle Challenge in July.

The Varna Tempest and Diablo momentarily at rest.
photo: Dave Larrington

Also setting a new world record was Canadian Paralympian Greg Westlake. Greg piloted his hand-powered Avos Arrow down the newly-repaved course and shot through the speed trap at 43.495 mph/69.9 kph. Those were just three of the notable achievements this year. For a full rundown of personal bests check out this overview of the event written by Mike Mowett and posted on Sam's blog.

Greg Westlake inside the Avos Arrow (with top removed) prepares for a speed run.
photo: Dave Larrington

Monday, Sept.21, the City of Vancouver approved the first BMX/MTB skills park in the city at a Park Board meeting. The facility will be located on an unused piece of land adjacent to the H.R. Macmillan Planetarium. Through the hard work of <aref="http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=53459006970&ref=share">a dedicated group of BMX and MTB cyclists, led by Chris Young and Rob Venables, with the ample support of Park Board Commissioner Sarah Blyth and Mark Vulliamy (Park Board Manager of Research and Planning) the idea for the park began with public consultation (3MB PDF download) in Jan. 2009. With the approval of the Board now confirmed, the park will enter the design phase. It's hoped it will be ready during the spring/summer of 2010.

</aref="http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=53459006970&ref=share">

The red square in the forested area is the proposed location for the dirt jump park.
The Planetarium and Museum of Vancouver are to the left.
photo: kitsilano.ca

Learn more about Hinge Park in the Olympic Village

photo: The Challenge Series

Have you walked by the Olympic Village and wondered where the little creek in the newly-built Hinge Park comes from and what its purpose might be? A rugged, lonely coastline. Countless ships and sailors taken by its fierce storms and jagged rocks. Westward, nothing to see but North Pacific swells, until Hawaii finally climbs above the horizon. Men have sailed the route for centuries. Now, one man will put his trust in his legs, his heart, and his mind to make a historic journey.

In June, 2010, Greg Kolodziejzyk will attempt to become the first person in history to navigate this notorious stretch of ocean under his own power. His plan – pedal a custom-made state-of-the-art human-powered boat 3000 miles across the Pacific Ocean, from Vancouver to Hawaii. The world-record attempt is expected to take between 40 to 80 days.

Check out this latest example of my web copywriting work.
